Descriptions, Reviews, Etc.

Contributor Bio(s): >Jarrett J. Krosoczka has been passionate about comics and graphic novels since he was a kid. He got the idea for this book when he went back to visit his elementary school as a grown-up and saw the same lunch lady as when he'd been a student. He began to wonder about her life, and after years of thought, drawing, and fun, this unusual superhero was born. Lunch Lady has starred in three other graphic novels: Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute, Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians, and Lunch Lady and the Author Visit Vendetta.

Jarrett is also the author of numerous popular picture books, including Punk Farm, Punk Farm on Tour, Max for President, and Baghead. You can visit him on the Web at www.studiojjk.com. He lives in Northampton, Massachusetts, with his wife and daughter and their pug, Ralph Macchio.

The Breakfast Bunch members go to summer camp, where their super-hero pal Lunch Lady works in the canteen. Together they uncover the mystery of a swamp monster terrorizing the campers. Per usual with this graphic novel series, the ludicrous story line is merely a vehicle for Krosoczka's creatively named super-hero gadgetry and off-the-wall cartoon illustrations in bold black and white with vibrant highlighter-yellow accents. Gr 2–5—Fun and funny. Brave Lunch Lady; her reliable sidekick, Betty; and those inquisitive kids Hector, Dee, and Terrence move the mystery and adventure to the road as they take on the slimy swamp monster that's been terrifying Camp Fun Times. There are plenty of suspects as the kids get to know their counselors, but Lunch Lady and Betty are ready for anything with new gadgets like an Underwater Bendy-Straw Breathing Apparatus and an Underwater Mixer-Propulsion Backpack. The two-color art is loopy and energetic, with varied, easy-to-follow page layouts. Jokes and puns are sprinkled throughout to keep the energy high until the exciting finale.—Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MD
