Publisher Description: Coatesville has always been a city of visionaries, from its namesake, Moses Coates, a prosperous farmer and the area's first postmaster, to Rebecca Lukens, the "Woman of Steel" and one of the first female business executives in the United States. As the Lukens Steel Company prospered along the banks of the scenic Brandywine River, so did Coatesville, Chester County's only city. Their rich history is told here through nearly two hundred historic photographs. |
Contributor Bio(s): Mowday, Bruce Edward: - A majority of the images are from the collections of the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust, through the help of executive director Scott Huston; the Graystone Society, through executive director Gene DiOrio; and the Coatesville Historic Commission. Bruce Edward Mowday, who was raised in the Coatesville area and worked at the former Coatesville Record, contributed the text. He is the author of Along the Brandywine River and two other books on local history, including one on the Battle of Brandywine. |
