Durant, the seat of Bryan County, is located in southeastern Oklahoma only 10 miles from Lake Texoma, one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States; it is also about 17 miles from the Red River and the Texas border. Durant, a beautiful city with many magnolia trees lining its streets, has officially been recognized by the Oklahoma Legislature as the "Magnolia Capital of Oklahoma." The annual Magnolia Festival is attended by tens of thousands of people and offers a wide variety of family-oriented activities.

Contributor Bio(s): Sprague, Donovin Arleigh: - Donovin Arleigh Sprague provides insight into the area and community of Durant in this collection of nearly 200 images featuring people and events connected with its history. Sprague, a historian, lecturer, artisan, musician, and the author of seven Arcadia Publishing books, works at Black Hills State University and the University of Iowa. He is a former resident of Bryan County and has appeared on national television programs about history. Sprague was born and raised on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. He is a descendant of Chiefs Hump I and II and Chief Crazy Horse.
