Publisher Description:
One of the problems which beset the practical conservation of stone buildings is the fragmentation of the disciplines involved. This book, in two volumes, brings these disciplines together by involvement of contributors with different experiences and
approaches to the same materials.

Volume One: This volume introduces the practitioner to the complexities and background history of stone conservation. Whilst this volume has comprehensive descriptions of the building and decorative stones used in the British Isles, the information given on the origins and characteristics of rocks is of international interest and relevance. The final section of this volume explores the nature of building and decorative stones further in the context of weathering and decay in such a way that practitioners will be guided towards successful diagnosis and analysis of deterioration problems. Volume Two: A variety of building types and environments has been used to ensure that the broad scope of common problems covered, from the ruined site to the standing roofed building and from the museum controlled' site to the sculptured church monument. This volume will be of practical value to many users including art historians, archeologists, architects, surveyors and engineers, masonry contractors and sculpture conservators in solving problems and in learning to use each other's skills and experience.
