Annotation: When Maximillian (Bo) Stubbs's mother marries again, she sends him to stay with his father while she is on her first-class honey moon cruise. Max's father is a camel-keeper; the camel's name is Ahmed. Max does not like the camel; he does not like the fact that his father is a camel-keeper; and he certainly does not appreciate having to share a less than first-class way of life.

In the course of the month Max spends with his father, Ahmed gives rides in a shopping center, takes part in a travel agents' convention and a state fair, and is featured at a dude ranch and in a Las Vegas night club act. Maximillian meets Manuelo, Iago, Jesus, Emmy and Mama Rosita, who run a taco stand at the fair; Ruthle Britten who is a school librarian in the winter and a ranch hand in the summer; and Trina Rose, a famous English singer, who is an old friend of his father. He also meets Lilly and Sabrina. In fact he meets them several times, under several names, and under several circumstances; he cannot tell what Lilly and Sabrina are.

By the end of the month Max has discovered some new things about first class. Also about kindness, love and loyalty and the art of pretending. People and events, Max finds, are not always what they seem; in fact, even someone as smart as Max can sometimes be surprised.

Publisher Description:

The Camel-Keeper's Son

Maxmillian (also known as Bo) Stubbs's mother has just married a very rich man. Bo is looking forward to moving into his stepfather's big house and attending the snooty Fortnum School in the fall. Everything about Bo's new life will be first class, just like his new navy blazer with the Fortnum crest.

While his mother is on her honeymoon, Bo spends a month with his father, Woody, an itinerant camel-keeper who entertains at shopping malls and conventions around the country. Woody is decidedly not first class, and neither is the eccentric cast of characters Bo meets on their travels. But Bo learns a lot from them that isn't taught at Fortnum...about love, loyalty, and the art of pretending -- and that class and first class are not necessarily the same thing.
