Annotation: 1883. His early life as a slave, his escape from bondage and his complete history to the present time. The autobiography of Frederick Douglass, a great orator and writer and a leading figure in the abolitionist movement. He escaped slavery in 1838. He lectured throughout the East at abolitionist meetings, recounting his life as a slave. His first autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: an American slave revealed his master's identity and he took refuge in England where he was helped by sympathetic liberals to buy his freedom. After returning to America he published the abolitionist North Star, the first of a series of journals he was to create. During the Civil War he helped recruit black soldiers for the Union army, afterwards supporting Reconstruction and campaigning for Republican Presidents. Life and Times of Frederick Douglass is one of the three autobiographies published by Douglass. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
