Publisher Description:
Echo Summit played a major role in early California and Nevada history. Beginning in the early 1850s, fortune-seekers rushed westward over Echo Summit in search of gold in El Dorado County. The discovery of silver and gold in Virginia City in 1859 reversed the travel eastward. After 1869, travel over Echo Summit was reduced to a trickle. Today, Echo Summit is a major route to the south Lake Tahoe basin. There are sites along the summit ridge, like Echo Lake, Berkeley Echo Lake Camp, and Echo Summit Lodge, that have contributed to the history of Echo Summit.

Contributor Bio(s): DeWitt, Paul: - Coauthors Paul DeWitt and Dorothy De Mare are children of early Echo Summit families who were friends for almost 50 years. Dorothy De Mare is one of the founders of the San Francisco Bay Area Postcard Club and a retired satellite controller of Telstar, EchoStar, and Sirius XM satellites. Paul DeWitt was a government teacher, social science department chairperson at Newark Memorial High School, and Teacher of the Year for Alameda County before retiring after 38 years in education. They share images from private and personal collections, museums, period marketing materials, state and county collections, and historical archives, providing readers many never-before-seen historical images.
