Publisher Description:
This book is about a horse named Black Beauty and the time he spent with his mother and what she taught him. He is then sold to Squire Gordon who loves animals and is known for treating them very well. He enjoys time there but later is sold to Earlshall Park where life is painful. Black Beauty gets hurt and keeps on being sold from this point on and keeps being treated badly. At the end he is sold one last time and reconnects to a former trainer who makes sure he lives out the rest of his day in peace. Sewell sold the novel to local publisher Jarrolds on 24 November 1877, when she was 57 years of age. Although it is now considered a children's classic, she originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. She said "a special aim was to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses".
