Publisher Description:
Although Northern New York did not host any Civil War battles, it did not come out unscathed in the War Between the States. Brave soldiers fought in many major clashes, such as those of Jefferson County's Thirty-fifth New York Volunteer Regiment. Civilians struggled for the cause in their own way, with many active Underground Railroad stops across the region. The war's legacy lived on decades beyond the conflict through the many members of the Grand Army of the Republic, Harriet Tubman's home in Auburn and John Brown's burial place in North Elba. Author Dave Shampine compiles his most fascinating columns from the Watertown Daily Times to chronicle the role that New York's North Country played in the Civil War.

Contributor Bio(s): Shampine, Dave: - As Dave Shampine completes his forty-first year as crime reporter and history writer with the Watertown Daily Times in Northern New York, he provides his fourth offering to The History Press in this collection of Civil War stories. He made his debut with The History Press in 2009 with Remembering New York's North Country: Tales from Times Gone By and then followed in 2010 with two publications: Colorful Characters of Northern New York: Northern Lights and the work to which he was dedicated for more than a decade, The North Country Murder of Irene Izak: Stained by Her Blood. A native of Carthage, New York, and a lifetime resident of Jefferson County, New York, Mr. Shampine takes pride in his education at Carthage Augustinian Academy, Jefferson Community College, where in 2007 he was honored with a professional achievement award, Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire and the State University of New York College at Brockport.
