Publisher Description: In this murder mystery, the UK State Security blocks an investigation into the shooting of a foreign man and woman in Hemmingway Wood. Now retired, the frustrated and furious investigating officer, Chief Inspector Silas Bradshaw, travels to Belarus to attend the woman's funeral looking for answers. His visit raises questions with his own troubled past: that recurring nightmare image of the girl on the Midnight Train Who is she? On his arrival in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, he has the feeling of being watched. He witnesses the brutality of their Milisiya police breaking up a harmless students' protest in Victory Square. This is 2018 in a country ruled by a President in power since 1994, and still with Dictatorship undertones from the old Soviet regime. He travels to the town of Linkada where he discovers the dead woman Tasha had been in the UK on a false passport; her real name: Polina. He stays with an attractive woman called Vanya. After the funeral he begins to reveal to Vanya why, over the years, he had suppressed his own deep buried emotions; his obsession and the feelings of guilt with the girl on the Midnight Train that created his need to attend Polina's funeral. But who is Vanya? ... Was she once involved with Belarusian State Security? Now back in the UK, Bradshaw is unexpectedly approached by the Head of a mysterious Government Security Unit (GSU) investigating why Bradshaw's original investigation had been illegally halted. Was Polina's death linked to a pharmaceutical company run by an unscrupulous Romanian scientist, Dr Dumitru, supplying faulty drugs to 'WHO' for use in African countries? After Bradshaw's investigation was closed down, he had discovered and held onto a secret file that could bring down Dumitru and hopefully catch Polina's psychopathic killer. |
