Publisher Description:
A book about Tissue Culture in the Pacific describing research work done at the University of the South Pacific and South Pacific Commission. The implications of tissue culture work for the Pacific region are discussed. One of the most important work I did was the maintenance and distribution of popular crops within the Pacific region in the form of in vitro plantlets. At USP Samoa and SPC Suva, I was regularly sending out plantlets of kumara, vanilla and others to all islands needing 'crop starters' after hurricanes. USP had 13 member countries while SPC had 27 member countries.Tissue culture is a great way of disseminating crop plants between island states and territories of the Pacific because of its disease free status. Plantlets are maintained in sterile conditions and are tested against known plant diseases.
