Publisher Description: After the Campaign in Poland, the Division was transfered to Germany where it was assigned a role in the Air, Land and Sea invasion of Norway in May of 1940. The Division took part in actions in central Norway, being transported by sea to ports along the Norwegian central coast, and then in operations attempting to link up with units of the 3rd Gebirgsjager Division holding the Northern port of Narvik. When the Allies retreated from Norway and the county capitulated to Germany, the Division was put on occupation duties in Norway, and then in service with the forces in the Lappland area of the far north. The Division served in the far north until 1944 when the German forces moved back into Norway. In December, 1944 the Division was sent to Denmark, and after resting and regrouping, was posted to fight on the Western Front. Late in the War, the 2nd Gebirgsjager Division was sent to fight in Southern Germany where it was destroyed, with portions surrendering to the Americans. The 2nd Mountain Division is one of the divisions of mountain infantry of the German Army (Wehrmacht) active during the Second World War. |
