| Publisher Description: 1953 was a year of political restrictions against eastern member churches of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), but also a year of turnaround in church policy in the GDR, starting with church-state discussions on June 10, 1953. After the election victory of the Adenauer government in the autumn of 1953, the EKD managed to expand its political influence through the occupation of important governmental positions. Infighting within the church about monies, staffing, church law, and Bible revisions took up much of the council's time.
