Publisher Description:
City identity is a strong concept or conditions that differ cities from other locations. The city identity creates images in people's mind even who havn't seen it before. It is an essential characteristics for creating better environments. Unfortunately, today, Nicosia has been facing the problem of sustaining the city identity as similar to many other cities around the world. Therefore, the research presented in this book, sets up a model for sustaining the identity of Nicosia in North Cyprus. Initially, an identity formation scheme is prepared, then Nicosia is analysed in four -city, district, space and unit- scales according to the scheme and finally, strategies are developed in four scales in order to sustain the city identity. This research is expected to provide a framework for creating both meaningful and usable environments as well as making the city memorable with its environmental and social dentities. Besides, the model that is prepared for this research, can also be used separately for determining another place or a city identity and sustaining their identities as well.
