Publisher Description:
lvaro Siza Vieira recalls the 'emotion and enthusiasm of witnessing' his first built project of houses being constructed An early residential project from 65 successful, international architects are featured in this special edition Read their experiences and vision for their first house design and how their approach to architecture has developed over the years This special issue contains an early residential project from 65 successful architects from around the world. International practitioners such as Han Tumertekin, Gurjit Singh Matharoo, Tatiana Bilbao, and Andra Matin are featured. Works from Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Lacaton & Vassal, RCR, and Brooks + Scarpa are also included. For many young architects, designing a house is a starting point in their career and the first opportunity to express their view of architecture by building in the real world. Searching through our archives, we were able to find photographs, texts, and drawings of first or early houses from each of these architects. This material describes how the design vision early in their careers were connected to urban, cultural, or historical contexts. We also ask how their approach to architecture has changed since this early period. As expected, many architects have moved beyond their early vision with additional experience. However, for some the vision has developed and matured while keeping the basic concept. With projects spanning 60 years, it is insightful to not only see the different periods of design, but also how each architect has changed during the course of their career. Text in English and Japanese.
