Publisher Description:

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

As she did in The Oriental Piano, Zeina Abirached brings the cultures of the East and West closer together in collaboration with Mathias nard, winner of the Goncourt Prize in 2015.

In all Buddhist traditions, taking shelter is the first step on the road to inner liberation. It's an act of testimony where trust in the buddha, dharma and sangha, and the three treasures, is spoken out loud. Based on this idea, Zeina Abirached and Mathias nard weave an intimate story about loneliness, love, and the search for identity.

Take Shelter takes place on two geographical and time lines: in Afghanistan in 1939, the writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach has a romance with a paleontologist while in Europe the Second World War breaks out. In Berlin 2016, a young German collaborates in the creation of a refugee camp and falls in love with a married Syrian woman, a love that is reciprocated, even though cultural differences seem to separate them.

Two atypical love stories that resonate with each other despite the distance: troubled times, human beings who, trying to overcome their differences, face opposition from society.
The beautiful and poetic images of Zeina Abirached are put at the service of one of the best writers our time, a specialist in Arab culture and always committed to freedoms in the East, giving rise to an extraordinarily artistic and unavoidably political work that's needed now more than ever.
