Publisher Description: The book is an interesting thread of reasoning in identifying processes with consciousness characteristics. In Math, a function must be continuous at a point to be differentiable at that point but continuity doesn't imply differentiability (for example a cusp). In much the same way, consciousness may have the characteristic of non-reversibility, but it doesn't necessarily mean that non-reversibility implies consciousness. To this end, it is possible to have a thermostat that takes input from more than one part of a house and it could either work by not switching on the heat until all inputs were below a certain value (in series) or just one input was below a certain value (in parallel). This would be non-reversible yet no more conscious than a thermostat with a single input. This is just one example of the thought this book has provoked in its attempt to pinpoint where consciousness exists. This book presents an original scientific theory of consciousness. The theory is simple and is based on the 19th-century science at the heart of the steam engine and the Industrial Revolution. Has the ancient mystery been solved? |
