Publisher Description:
The physical health of people with severe mental illnesses is high on the mental health care policy and practice agendas, as recent evidence shows high prevalance of ill-health amongst SMI groups, in particular diabetes, heart disease, COPD, and general poor health. Factors that have created this public health issue are multiple, and touch on lifestyle, a lack of focus on physical health in mental health settings, lack of clinical awareness and skills, as well as the impact of treatments and medications.

. . The 2006 Chief Nursing Officers review of mental health nursing practice it was highlighted as a key priority for practice and as a result, mental health curriculums are being adapted at many nursing schools so that MH students receive more teaching on physical health, both as a public health issue and directly relating to their own clinical skills. This trend will no doubt continue internationally where the public health trend is similar to ours.

. . Clinical nursing books and those on public health issues focus very much on adult branch settings, and to date no text exists that gets mental health nursing students up-to-speed on physical well-being issues of their client group or focuses on the clinical skills they need on the job.

. . This groundbreaking textbook will offer the following:

. . 1.Coverage of core concepts of physical health/illness in mental illness
. 2.Coverage of the impact of physical illness on clients with mental illness
. 3.Coverage of current practice issues and barriers to physical care for their clients
. 4.Coverage of relevant physical care and professional nursing practice issues
. . The book will make good use of cases, boxed examples, objectives, end of chapter test questions etc. to ensure the book is engaging and user-friendly. .
