Vernon Cooray is a professor in electricity, with special attention to transients and electrical discharges, at Uppsala University, Sweden. Vernon Cooray is an experienced teacher and currently conducts several courses, including the physics of lightning, physics of electrical discharges, and lightning protection for postgraduate students and personnel working in industry. He has conducted experimental and theoretical research in the physics and effects of lightning flashes, electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic wave propagation, lightning protection, and the physics of electrical discharges. He has authored more than 250 scientific papers and edited The Lightning Flash (IET, 2003). Vernon Cooray is the editor in chief of the Journal of Lightning Research and Open Access Atmospheric Science Journal. He is a member of the scientific committee of the International Symposium on Lightning Protection and vice president of the scientific committee of the International Conference on Lightning Protection.
