Publisher Description:
Windsor is one of the UK's major tourist destinations. Visitors flock to see the magnificent castle dominating the centre of town, and marvel at the Royal pageantry and surrounding areas, including the seventeenth-century Guildhall and the network of medieval streets. Today they can enjoy a unique shopping experience under the cast-iron arches of the old Great Western Railway station and have a meal in the former Royal Waiting Room. In the face of such obvious history, the development of the town itself is often overshadowed, but pockets of the old are still to be found in odd corners, providing a comforting link with the past. In this volume, older Windsorians will recall some of the scenes of yesteryear with nostalgia, while visitors may be surprised to learn just how great the changes have been.

Contributor Bio(s): Friends of Windsor & Royal Museum: - Windsor and Royal Borough Museum is a museum of the history of the town of Windsor, in the English county of Berkshire. It is accommodated within Windsor Guildhall a Grade 1 listed building. The Friends Windsor & Royal Borough Museum is a thriving group dedicated to making the history of the local area available to the public. For over twenty years, the work of the Friends has been focused on the campaign for a Windsor based museum. The group supports the development of the museum and works in conjunction with it in many projects. All old photographs for this title will be coming from the museum, and proceeds from the book will go towards it in return, in the hope this will benefit the development of historical research and the promotion of heritage in the area.
