Publisher Description:
The King Pest, in which there is an allegory, is a story of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe first published in September 1835. King Pest is the main antagonist of the story,"King Pest". He is the supposed ruler of a kingdom, in reality, the kingdomis a basement, and his subjects are a group of six drunken beggars. He first appears, drinking merrily with his subjects, and graciously, allows Hugh and Legs to join their merriment. The King introduces himself and his peers, but this arouses Hugh's suspicion, for the King's lair used to belong to Hugh's friend, Will Wimble the Undertaker. The King becomes slightly offended, but keeps his cool, and speaks politely, warning that rebels will be drowned in October Ale. When, Hugh simply calls the King and the other royals as frauds and actors. This causes the King to angrily declare them treasoners, and orders their death sentence.
