The severe shortage of teachers brought on by the war meant that teenagers -- some with little or no training -- were placed in charge of rural schools. Trained teachers who had retired or left to raise families were pressed back into service, forced to cope with isolation, loneliness and poor living and working conditions. With Unfailing Dedication is a fascinating and enlightening look at this almost unbelievable period in history. |
