Publisher Description:
In the realm of Ostravah, magic lies broken and forgotten. Now, with the approaching millennium, an ancient strife that has spanned aeons is about to rekindle because the capricious Gods never rest - and they want their dues...
The epic-laced high fantasy series continues....
Solancei, cousin, best friend, and life-shield of the Princess Iambre of Ostravah has disappeared during an illegal duel. Now, the secrecy that kept Iambre from the truth is cutting and the implications are dire, for should her friend's clandestine undertakings be made public, Iambre's pristine reputation could become irrevocably damaged - yet Iambre cares little except to have her friend back, safe and hale. But what can she do when even the King's Chief of Security appears unable to locate Solancei?
Regretting her recent dire behaviour, Iambre hopes for the best yet fears the worst. Also, to throw further shadows on her existence, Iambre's would-be lover, Bilan Metavo, Lance Captain of her retinue, remains steadfast in the face of her advances, but does she really stand to lose him too?
In uneasy spirits about Zanzier and local Lord, Simarovien Zulavi, additional revelations brought to her by the Chief, only serve to dislodge Iambre's fragile personal peace even further. Yet still, she has little choice but to act the consummate diplomate and keep her mind on social chores in the spirit of diplomacy and politic. But for how long? And at what price?
Meanwhile, still cut off from her precious skills, Solancei finds herself mired in uncomfortable circumstances where a reckless choice might be the only thing that can save her, and she is not the only one.
Forced by circumstances and crippled magic to accept a few unsavoury truths about Ostravah and the Guardians' chances of success, Denarlin is plagued by peculiar new sensations. Mounting frustration shadowing his progress, his fey notions in regards to procuring a Neidar Ba'raie to further his cause, only strengthen - however, this ancient well of magic is an illegal presence that should not exist. A Neidar Ba'raie is dangerous, highly unstable, and without guarantees that he will be in time to bind the power to his purpose, will he be justified in breaking the Maker's laws and in trying anyway?
The search for the Twins must remain true, yet for every mile travelled the guidelines blur just a little more; time is running short - and not just for Guardian Denarlin.
A young seer has some troubling visions...
Excerpt:
Breath hitching, Solancei doubled over, her vision floating strangely out of focus and time. Del'Draventar disappeared as though enveloped in a haze, then came back into focus.
"I would protect you " he assured her, completely out of context; she didn't understand why, but his eyes trailed some kind of threat she could not see.
Her vision wavered again. Her body was awash with vivacious pain and her head throbbed.
'Are we under attack?' she wanted to cry, rubbing her temples and feeling worse by the beat, but a ring of steel cut back her words as del'Draventar drew his ancestral sword with an aggressive flourish.
