Publisher Description:

This volume, written by Brian Hall, presents an in-depth look at an integral part of mining strategy optimisation - cut-off specification. The publication builds a thorough understanding of cut-offs, covering simple concepts along with the more complex and comprehensive models of cut-off theory and evaluation practices. The first section of the volume addresses the principles underlying the more complex approaches to strategy optimisation; whilst the second section deals with the finer details of conducting evaluations.

Contributor Bio(s): Hall, Brian: - Brian's primary expertise is in planning for underground metalliferous mining operations including detailed mine designs, technical assessments, feasibility studies and strategic planning. He began his career as a graduate trainee with Consolidated Gold Fields Australia Ltd in 1973, and after a stint at Mt Lyell in Tasmania, moved to Gold Fields of South Africa in 1977 with posts at West Driefontein Gold Mine and Black Mountain base metals operation. In 1982 Brian joined Mount Isa Mines in Queensland where the next 12 years saw him fill the roles of Underground Manager (lead and copper), Planning Manager and Chief Mining Engineer. Here he was responsible for the development of an in-house computerised mine planning system, and was involved in studies across a range of mining, mineral processing and pyrometallurgical systems. Brian joined AMC Consultants in 1994 where his experience covers planning, design and scheduling, technical audits, strategic reviews, feasibility studies, cut-off grade studies, mine strategy optimizations and computer simulations for operations in Australasia, Asia, Europe and North America. Over the last decade, his main areas of work have involved cut-off and strategy optimisation studies for underground and open pit mines across a range of commodities. Holding a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce, Brian has developed and presented courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level at universities and provided technical training for clients. Since 2001 he has presented workshops on project evaluation and the theory and practical application of cut-off grade and mine and business strategy optimization, and has presented a number of technical papers on these subjects. In addition to being a Chartered Professional of the Minerals Institute, Brian is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Materials, Minerals and Mining and a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland.
