Publisher Description:
Children learn that they can help the world with the actions they take

A family in Chile sets out for a glorious day at the beach. A girl and her brother happily swim with the sea life, only to discover the underwater world is littered with garbage and plastic, and a seal caught in an abandoned fishing net. They untangle the seal then remove the ghost net (so called because they are hard to see in the water).

At first distraught, the children contemplate what they can do to help. They poke, prod, and stretch the net. They whisper spells and ask each other what they should do. Then they see a butterfly and realize it was transformed from a caterpillar. They see a bird use a twig to build a nest. The bird tells them of a special place where trash is recycle into new and useful things.

Knowing now that they can make a difference, the boy and his sister carry the net home chattering about what they will do to make the sea life happy again.

The next day they accompany their father to the recycle center with their used nets and other trash, soon to be treasure. They return to the beach to find a clean ocean because of the action they took.

Presented in both English and Spanish, with down from above and up from under and before-and-after illustrations, Better than New: A Recycle Tale is an inspiring story that presents children with a problem and helps them find the solution, while teaching about the dangers of ocean plastics and encouraging a healthy relationship with the natural world.
