Publisher Description:

Growing up in suburban California with the name Firecat was a traumatic enough experience to cause one to develop PTSD. However, Firecat was also incorrectly assigned female at birth. Only his counselor understood what was going on, and kept it a secret from everyone. Based on his own childhood, abstract artist, Charles Burnell has woven together this novel in an effort to share with the world, what gender dysphoria looks like when you have no point of reference to recognize it.

In 1981, it is uncommon for men to gain custody in divorce. Cat's father is determined to be the very best single parent he can be. When six year old Cat is molested in Summer Camp, Dad is quick to put her in counseling. Lonely and confused, she bonds quickly with her counselor. When Cat begins to exhibit signs of gender dysphoria, the counselor is quick to intervene. After two years of counseling, Cat's memory is almost completely erased. Living with her father in suburbia, Cat can't wait for the weekends when she gets to go visit her mother in Berkeley.

Journey with Cat to her very first Grateful Dead concert. Feel the fear and confusion that comes with her loss of innocence. Hitchhike with Cat across the country, hop a freight train, and find friendship and support in the most unlikely places. Look through Cat's eyes as she views the world through the abstract perspective of gender dysphoria.
