Als Jesus sich die Geldwechsler und Taubenverkaufer als Zielscheibe seiner Handlung aussuchte, gab er seiner Aktion einen impliziten symbolischen Sinn bei, der zum Tragen kommen wurde, falls die Priesterschaft und das Volk diesen letzten Umkehrruf nicht befolgen wurden. Durch die Storung der Tatigkeit der Geldwechsler und Taubenverkaufer wurde namlich auch der Opferkult zeichenhaft zum Erliegen gebracht.
