Publisher Description: Written in prose, this tragedy delves into the life of a wealthy upper-class family in which the father, the second husband of Bernarda Alba, has just died. As head of the household, Bernarda tries to keep her five daughters (one from her first husband) from the common people, especially men, as she deems them unworthy of her children. Pepe el Romano appears from a neighboring town, and with him the expectation of affairs between three sisters follows. Then, in an episode of jealousy and betrayal one of the daughters engages in an affair. Bernarda then kills the man with a shotgun blast meant to scare him away. People suspect the daughter of wrongdoing, and eventually she commits suicide. Worried of what people will say, Bernarda offers an official story in which her daughter died a virgin. |
