Publisher Description:

Steel Pier opened in 1898 and became the "Showplace of the Nation." It was the first amusement pier in Atlantic City to be built on iron pilings and steel girders, thus its name "Steel Pier." From 1930, when "March King" John Philip Sousa signed an exclusive contract, to the dawn of the casino era, Atlantic City's Steel Pier hosted thousands of entertainers, showbiz personalities, and circus acts.

Over the course of 80 years, from 1898 to 1978, Steel Pier developed from a quiet, genteel amusement that featured light classical music and cakewalks to a vast entertainment complex that offered movies, big-name vaudeville acts, exhibits, big bands, rock bands, and the Water Circus with its famed driving horse. What makes this even more compelling is that one could spend the entire day on the pier and take all of this in for one small admission fee.
