Publisher Description: HEART OF DARKNESS Kurtz, the Enigma-A God Heart of Darkness is a narration by Charlie Marlow the Captain of a ferryboat. Marlow tells the story of his blood cuddling and scary experience as they happened during their voyage. This narration was done to a group of men who sat on an anchored ship on the River Thames. The narrator finds himself on a voyage up River Congo into the Free State, and in the very heart of Africa. At the time he transports Ivory downstream. This is after his dreams come true when he landed a job working for an Ivory trading firm. Marlow is oblivious of the painful truths that lie ahead of him, the natives in these parts suffered greatly under Kurtz. Kurtz was a mastermind of slavery for the natives who were forced to harvest rubber. Many natives were maimed and murdered under his instructions. Many more died of diseases resulting from pathetic living conditions. Marlow recalls how thousands of people died as a result of genocide. The author portrays Kurtz as an executioner who decides which natives to live and which ones should die. He is cold, ruthless, and brutal to the core. Even after having them killed, he ordered to have their heads put on spikes and mounted around his fence. All this was meant to instill great fear in the people.
