"But for what purpose was the earth formed?" asked Candide. "To drive us mad," replied Martin."

― Voltaire, Candide

Candide is written by Voltaire (Fran ois-Marie Arouet). Voltaire is a French Enlightenment writer famous for his wit, his criticism of Christianity, and his advocacy of freedom of speech and religion and the separation of church and state, all noticeably incorporated inCandide

Candide grows up in the home of Baron Thunder-ten-tronckh. He is the illegitimate nephew of the Baron. He has an undiluted optimism thanks to his tutor, Dr. Pangloss, who taught him that their world is the best of all possible worlds, and he accepted this teaching as absolute truth. Candide is romantically attracted to the Baron's young and beautiful daughter, Cun gonde.

One day, Cun gonde enticed Candide to kiss her. The Baron sees them and banishes Candide. From then, starts what seemed to be an unending series of unfortunate events. Candid was coerced to enlist into the army, where he is abused. He eventually escapes and is given aid by a man named Jacques. Coincidentally, he also finds his mentor Pangloss, now a poor beggar who contracted syphilis. Pangloss explains that the Baron's castle was destroyed and the family, including Cun gonde, were killed.

In Candide's continual journey, Pangloss was cured of his illness and Jacques dies en route for Lisbon. In Lisbon, Pangloss was executed and Candide was flogged but he, unexpectedly, somehow reunites with Cun gonde who is now the property of two men. Candide kills both men and, now together with Cun gonde and an old lady, he again flees to avoid being prosecuted for murder.

Candide and Cun gonde plan to marry but are again separated. Meanwhile, the authorities pursue Candide for murder. Candide continued to flee with his faithful manservant, Cacambo.

Candide traveled the world to pursue soundness and the love of his life, Cun gonde, all the while facing a wide variety of ceaseless hardships and misfortunes.

His optimism is repeatedly tested but his faith remains, somehow.
