Publisher Description:
Troy is a good man who suffers from PTSD complications after serving time in the military overseas. He is at his favorite morning coffee house checking the help wanted ads, when he meets an attractive gym instructor coming out of work named Aaliyah. They start a conversation which eventually goes off the tracks when Troy brings up his Christian beliefs. A few days later, Troy is back at the coffee house, where he accidentally bumps into Rosa, a young girl, nine years old, and Rosa's coffee spills on the floor. Troy helps clean up the mess and it is revealed that Rosa is, in fact, Aaliyah's daughter .Aaliyah and Troy give their friendship a second chance and hit it off much better, including a brief kiss. Troy sees this as an indicator he has found "the one" but Aaliyah pulls back. This causes Troy frustration that he shares with his Veterans Support Group. Aaliyah invites Troy to "Club Expressions", a spoken word / poetry hipster club that her sister Monica manages. Initially feeling out of place by the hipsters with dyed hair and pierced body parts and the offerings of kombucha, Troy has an awkward confrontation with poet Heckler J in front of the club. Using his natural good will, Troy is able to talk the situation down in a classy way, making his presence known to the club members as a good guy and a new creative force on the scene. As such, Troy is invited by Aaliyah's meddling sister Monica to compete in the poetry slam competition the next week. What Monica didn't tell Troy, is that Aaliyah's "baby daddy" Brett, who Monica doesn't especially care for herself, is the returning poetry champion who will also be competing in the poetry tournament. Aaliyah herself will also be competing in the tournament. Somehow, Troy has found himself in a "love triangle" that he wasn't expecting and his emotions are now wrangled up way beyond his comfort level, pushing him further to the edge .Further complicating Troy's life are his quest for a full time job and his memberships in a Veteran Supports Group and a Church prayer group, both of which aim to help him with his struggles with PTSD. Not seeing much hope in a relationship with Aaliyah, despite his best efforts, Troy nonetheless forces himself to compete in the poetry tournament, if not to prove something to Aaliyah, at least to himself.
