Publisher Description:
Mathematical Intrigue Invaders seek to destroy life on Earth. To fight back, humans must reverse engineer invader technology. But human mathematics isn't good enough. The haunting adversary disrupting discovery of new physics is the mysterious positive actual infinity. By definition, infinity is outside the finite and rational. Upon inspection, infinity violates axiomatic deductive logic because we are confounded by paradox. Frustrated and desperate, we go where we should not, by wondering if irrational artsy and philosophic revelations or historical religious perceptions for infinity hold a clue for what infinity really is. Half the chapters develop properties for a useful version of infinity in the context of geometry, irrational numbers, quantum mechanics, Special Relativity, and the reciprocal of zero. Other chapters provide historical revelations and contrast rational with irrational, and logical with paradoxical. The mathematics concludes with the proposed Theory of Non-Finite Numbers (as formally developed in the textbook Special Algebra for Special Relativity). Students investigate infinity to help reverse-engineer alien technology. Under the stress of personal attacks, the students learn irrational numbers, quantum mechanics and Special Relativity. Before reading what is the needed new math, the reader is given the chance to solve the mystery of the mathematical clues. The story carries a reader unfamiliar with math. To follow the math, be familiar with f(x) and df/dx, at least... and love math.
