Annotation: This study examines changes in the living arrangements of both American-born and foreign-born elderly in Rhode Island between 1900 and 1950. The central question asked is whether a century of intensive industrialization and urbanization in the United States prior to 1950 produced any marked changes in the likelihood of people 65 and older to be living in independent or extended households: did the American family still constitute the primary source of care for the elderly by the early 1950s? Comparing the living arrangements of the elderly of Italian, Irish, and French-Canadian origins with that of those born in the United States, the study uses living arrangements to determine the cultural and ethnic impact on residential organizations during this period.

From the perspective of public policy study, the book devotes considerable attention to the relationship between Social Security payments and other cash assistance programs and the living arrangements of the elderly, as well as the link between the supply of affordable housing and the changes in family spatial organization among the elderly in Rhode Island. The book challenges conclusions from an early study by Edward Pryor concerning family structure in Rhode Island between 1875 and 1960, and provides an alternative view in the debate regarding household structure in the United States in the past three centuries.
