Publisher Description: Outlaws, cattlemen and a plethora of quirky pioneers once riddled southeastern New Mexico. In November 1892, E.W. Doll and J.B. Coates ignited rumors of an eight-foot petrified man in McKittrick Cave. A massive fire and subsequent shootout led to the demise of Phenix, one of the Old West's most scandalous towns. And in August 1932, Bonnie and Clyde kidnapped Carlsbad's Deputy Sheriff Joe Johns. Authors Donna Blake Birchell and John LeMay explore these little-known tales and more that have beguiled this region for centuries. |
Contributor Bio(s): Lemay, Donna Blake Birchell: - As a native of southeastern New Mexico, Donna Blake Birchell has heard the many stories of the fanciful events that occurred in the area in the far--and not-so-distant--past, and wanted to share these with you, the reader. As a collector of history, Birchell's greatest pleasure is to reveal times past with those who share her passion. John LeMay is the author of Tall Tales and Half Truths of Billy the Kid, The Real Cowboys and Aliens: UFO Encounters of the Old West with Noe Torres and The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: Vol. 1 1954-1980, to name a few.
