Publisher Description: The aim of this study was to analyze the importance of accessibility and attractiveness as two determinants for shopping and leisure time activities in the central city of Christchurch. The context is derived from consideration of divergent exogenous factors associated with selected cities in Germany and from the change of attitudes towards shopping and leisure time activities in modern societies. An international literature review was compiled to investigate the reasons leading to this development. The factors and measurements were further analysed to provide a frame for the case study. The objective measurable situation as well as behaviors and attitudes of central city visitors had to be surveyed. The study consequently was able to provide data on the situation related to accessibility patterns and attractiveness factors for both the real situation and the assessment of the same by the visitors to it. Comparing the results of both approaches, differences or corres-pondences occurred that led to further conclusions and potential measures. The book is addressed to decision makers and experts who are con-fronted with urban and traffic planning issues in cities. |
