Publisher Description:
This study analyzes the cooperation of the Roman patrician Giovanni Battista Crescenzi with the painter Bartolomeo Cavarozzi and discusses art and social transformation processes of the early 17th Century. Crescenzi was one of the few who understood the potentials of the transitioning art system and could take hold of it for individual gain. Among the active patrons in Rome and Madrid, he was not so much known for his collecting passion but for his artistic training. It enabled him to step in and act as a mediator between artists and clients at the moment the development of the art market made new demands on both the artist and the recipient. Crescenzi guaranteed not only the quality of his supervised commissions, but also provided collectors in Europe with paintings by artists with whom he had relationships. Through his relationship with Crescenzi, Cavarozzi could meet the demands of an increasingly liberalized market without losing any of the traditional patronage relations. Analysis of selected works by Cavarozzi shows that the specifics of the painter's artistic work were influenced by his interactions with Crescenzi. Cultural and theoretical questions accompany the reconstruction of the professional profile of Giovanni Battista Crescenzi and provide insights into the workings of the early modern art world.
